Propositions as semantic pretense
نویسنده
چکیده
Our linguistic and inferential practices are said to implicate a kind of abstract object playing various roles traditionally attributed to propositions, and our predictive and explanatory success with this ‘‘proposition-talk’’ is held to underwrite a realistic interpretation of it. However, these very same practices pull us in different directions regarding the nature of propositions, frustrating the development of an adequate unified theory of them. I explain how one could retain proposition-talk, and the advantages of interpreting it as being purportedly about propositions, even if problems about the identity conditions for propositions motivated a Quinean rejection of them. The non-error-theoretic solution is to understand proposition-talk in terms of semantic pretense. On this approach, talking as if there were propositions lets us put readily available logical and linguistic devices to new expressive purposes, providing a way to make indirectly certain complicated, genuinely true assertions we cannot make directly. Proposition-talk thus extends the expressive capacity of a language in a logicosyntactically conservative way. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pretense Theory and the Imported Background
Kendall Walton’s pretense theory, like its rivals, says that what’s true in a fiction F depends in part on the importation of background propositions into F. The aim of this paper is to present, explain, and defend a brief yet straightforward argument—one which exploits the specific mechanism by which the pretense theory says propositions are imported into fictions—for the falsity of the preten...

objects—‘Santa Claus is fat’ has one kind of semantic interpretation, while ‘Bob is fat’ has another. Meanwhile ‘pretense’ theories face the problem (among others) that no pretense seems to be going on at all when we say ‘Santa Claus doesn’t exist’. See Ludlow 1999 pg. 71, and also Brown, 2009, ch. 2. (Even so, such theories may actually be providing the most objectively simple 50 explanations ...
متن کاملAn Analogical Model of Pretense
Pretense has been implicated as playing a role in the development of many cognitive and social skills. Despite the importance and ubiquity of this phenomena, few computational models of pretense exist. We propose a model of pretense via analogical abduction. We suggest that pretense occurs via structural alignment. Where a mismatch occurs (i.e. something in the pretend scenario is not the same ...
متن کاملIntegrating a Hypernymic Proposition Interpreter into a Semantic Processor for Biomedical Texts
Semantic processing provides the potential for producing high quality results in natural language processing (NLP) applications in the biomedical domain. In this paper, we address a specific semantic phenomenon, the hypernymic proposition, and concentrate on integrating the interpretation of such predications into a more general semantic processor in order to improve overall accuracy. A prelimi...

The focal question in the field of informatology is the nature of information. Modern informatological theories can be grouped in three paradigms, i.e. mathematical-natural paradigm, semantic paradigm and cognitive paradigm. The difference between these paradigms depends on the factors of subjectivity and objectivity. Under the mathematical-natural paradigm, information is studied as a physical...
